My name is Joel Shapiro, I am a graduating senior from Maryland, and I am your Assistant Director for the first ever All-American Model UN Summer Ad-Hoc Academy at Johns Hopkins University from July 12th to 18th, 2020.
I have an important update to the scholarship competition we have outlined previously: the deadline for the scholarship competition is now April 1st, 2020.
The Ad Hoc Academy is a week-long, hands-on Model UN learning experience. Students will be assigned to a team of three and will compete in new simulations each day. Rather than traditional classroom or workshop learning, student teams will paired with a mentor who will work to develop Model UN skills– research, negotiation, writing, lobbying, and speaking–in real-time during a series of simulations focused on the United Nations, national cabinets, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and regional intergovernmental organizations (IGOs).
If you’re interested in growing as a delegate, meeting new people from all around the country, and competing for over $6000 in travel grants for All American programs, learning resources, and other prizes, you definitely should apply! I have both attended and staffed other All-American academies, and I can definitely say they were some of the best experiences I’ve had.

We are extending the deadline for submissions to the 2020 Ad Hoc Scholarship Competition to April 1st.
If you are interested in competing, make an infographic or informational video about the UN or one of the UN’s bodies. Your submission can be about anything related to the UN, but what we are looking for is an in-depth knowledge about a topic the UN is currently discussing, how the UN interacts with the topic, and solutions currently being implemented.
We will be handing out three scholarships for the Ad Hoc Academy (worth $1200 individually), to the three best submissions. They will be judged based off of originality, comprehensiveness, and how it reflects your understanding of the topic.
SUBMISSIONS ARE DUE BY APRIL FIRST AND WINNERS WILL BE ANNOUNCED SHORTLY AFTERWARDS.
Please email [email protected] with any questions or with your submission.
I hope I’ll see you at Hopkins this Summer!
