All-American Model UN Artificial Intelligence Policy

Purpose

This policy establishes the rules and expectations for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools by students participating in any program with All-American Model United Nations, including but not limited to the Travel Team cohort and Summer Academies.

The goal is to ensure academic integrity, support skill-building, and ensure protection of the team’s reputational success at conferences. Improper use of AI by a single member can result in disqualification of the entire team, unfairly hindering other students’ successes. For this reason, every student is responsible for understanding and following this policy, as well as any additional restrictions imposed by conference or event organizers.

Scope

This policy applies to:

  • All AI tools, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Claude, Grammarly, and others.
  • All Model UN activities conducted with All-American Model UN, including writing, researching, speaking, and participating in conferences.

Principles

  • Academic Integrity: Students must submit only their own original work for all Model UN activities conducted with All-American Model UN.
  • Skill Development: AI is permitted as a practice tool to refine ideas and communication skills, but it cannot replace independent critical thinking.
  • Conference Compliance: If a conference outlines an AI policy more restrictive than this one, that policy takes precedence for students participating in that conference.

Acceptable Uses of AI

Delegates may use AI tools for the following purposes in preparation for conferences:

  • Clarifying or rephrasing their own ideas for improved expression.
  • Practicing speaking and Q&A by simulating debate scenarios.
  • Conducting practice outside of the scope of a conference committee or training committee.
  • Locating academic sources or background research, provided that students evaluate the accuracy and reliability of such information.

Prohibited Uses of AI

Delegates may not use AI tools to generate any work product intended for submission, presentation, or distribution at a conference or training. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Position Papers
  • Resolutions or directives (in whole or in part)
  • Draft speeches or speech outlines
  • Written work used during practice sessions as if it were original

Delegates are strictly prohibited from using AI tools while in committee at a conference.

Accountability and Disclosure

Delegates must disclose to All-American staff when AI tools have been used in the preparation of ideas, practice materials, or research. Misrepresentation of AI-generated work as one’s own is considered plagiarism and a violation of this policy.

Violations of this policy may result in:

  • Internal disciplinary action, including removal from a conference team or probationary status
  • Notification to conference organizers and academic institutions if the violation affects competition integrity
  • Expulsion from the All-American Model UN Travel Team Cohort
